Teams developing with AI agents today usually depend on American cloud vendors, which means their code, their context, and their business knowledge run through infrastructure under US jurisdiction. For European organisations, and especially for the public sector and healthcare, that is becoming a real problem. Nodge is the European alternative: an organisation chooses where the platform runs, in Nodge's EU environment or fully self-hosted inside its own infrastructure. The entire DevOps process runs inside the platform, optimised for working with AI agents. A solo developer or SME team builds with the same guardrails as an enterprise, and an enterprise builds fast with AI without giving those guardrails up. ## The problem Nodge uses email for three things: platform login emails, support email, and the contact forms on its site. Small in volume, large in consequence. "Sovereignty is not a property of your own stack alone. It's a property of your entire chain," says Koen Freriks, owner of Nodge. "Every supplier we bring in becomes part of the promise we make to our customers. A sovereign platform that sends its login emails through an American vendor is not a sovereign platform. Then you have a marketing story, not a product." That made the candidate list short. An American provider was ruled out, however small email may look at first glance. As at sister company CoreCubes, the road led from Resend to AhaSend. ## Data location is not the question Freriks draws a distinction that serious buyers now make themselves: "'The data sits in the EU' is not the same as sovereign. An American vendor with European datacenters still falls under US jurisdiction, and therefore under legislation that can demand access to that data regardless of where it physically sits. So data location is not the question. Jurisdiction is the question." That works through into the details. Every Nodge supplier ends up on the [subprocessor list](https://nodge.ai/sub-processors), which is public and contractually part of their data processing agreement. "Enterprise prospects and public institutions actually read that list. In a DPIA or security review it's the first place anyone looks. One American vendor on it is enough to tip the entire conversation about sovereignty, however small that service is. At that point you're explaining why your exception isn't a problem, and that's a conversation you don't want to have." For Nodge, European email is not a precondition. It is part of the proposition. ## Why AhaSend Inside the platform, Nodge picks open source wherever it can. Email was the exception. "For email you want reliability and good deliverability. That's why we deliberately chose a supplier there instead of doing it ourselves." AhaSend met the jurisdiction requirement, was simple to connect, and is priced sharply. ## How it's working out "The documentation is very clear, so we had an integration standing in no time. That goes for the AI models we develop with too: they understand the documentation immediately." DNS setup is guided from the platform, which helps when you run multiple domains. And the dashboard gives per-email visibility. "If something doesn't arrive, we see where it got stuck instead of having to guess. On a new domain that visibility is extra valuable, because reputation is something you build. So far we've had almost no deliverability issues, and when something does go wrong, usually at a customer's end, we can see it directly in the platform." Delivery is critical at Nodge, because email sits on access rather than just notifications. "Login runs through email, so an email that doesn't arrive means a user who can't get into the platform. The same goes for contact forms and support email: what doesn't come in, we don't know we've missed." ## What stood out "How little work it takes to add another domain or application and use it right away. We have several applications and domains that each send their own mail, and it stays manageable in one account." ## Would Nodge recommend AhaSend? "Yes, and specifically to European SaaS builders who have to sell a story about sovereignty or data protection themselves. For them this isn't a vendor choice, it's part of their own proposition." "You can start on the free tier and scale later, and you don't have to pick a party that undercuts your own positioning the moment a customer asks for your subprocessor list.
